Zero Emissions

We are dedicated to reducing harmful greenhouse gases across the business. We’ve worked on this since 2012, when we joined the Carbon Trust Standard scheme. Our interim target is to reduce emissions by 50 per cent before 2030. To do this, we must find renewable energy sources, review alternative fuels for our fleet, and support our suppliers to set net-zero targets.

What is Net Zero ?

Net-zero is where a business produces no greenhouse gases in its operations from the get-go. This is different from carbon neutral, where a business balances its emissions with initiatives that avoid the same amount of carbon. This achieves a neutral value on a carbon footprint.

%

of all energy supplied to depots is from renewable sources.

%

of electricity used in our factories and warehouses is renewable.

%

of our carbon emissions has been reduced since 2012.

Our roadmap to net-zero

Reaching net-zero requires a robust roadmap across our business and supply chain using established and innovative approaches. This includes greener ways to deliver products, sourcing sustainable materials, and harnessing renewable power.

Emission reduction

In 2021, we achieved carbon-neutral manufacturing at our Howden and Runcorn factories. Now, we have targets to halve our total carbon emissions by 2030, and achieve net-zero by 2050.

Renewable energy

In 2022, using renewable energy, we avoided 4,000 tonnes of indirect carbon emissions at our manufacturing sites. We’re now taking our learnings to other areas of the business.

Renewable fuels

Our delivery trucks need to travel efficiently and safely. By using more renewable fuels, like HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), we produce 90 per cent less CO2 per litre compared to diesel.
